Photographer Rich Gilligan began his career photographing the skateboard scene in his hometown Dublin, Ireland. These roots set the groundwork for his loose, effortless style. His images are elegant and uncluttered, yet energetic and raw, stripping away facade and capturing real and intimate moments with his subjects and their environments.
Well known for his documentary approach to portraiture and place, Rich’s inquisitive and empathetic nature have led him to create both personal and commercial bodies of work that focus on the subtle nuances of people and place.
Personal projects have included DIY, where he documented homemade skateparks around the world and Rituals, an intimate portrait of subcultural life in Dublin.
He published his first book DIY in 2014 with Prestel and his photographs have been exhibited internationally including The Gallery of Photography Ireland, Le Bal Paris, The Belfast photo festival and the Journees PhotographiqueBienne, Switzerland. He is currently based between Ireland & NYC.
